Simply More Secure (Aug 2021 Update)

As we continue to make the Flipgrid experience simpler and more secure, these improvements may change how members can access your content. Please see if your Group or Topics are affected and update them before 10 August 2021, to minimize any disruption to your member community and keep your content secure. Some of these are legacy features, so don't fret if you don't recognize them!

  1. We're simplifying permissions - these settings will be changed
  2. All Topics will now be part of a Group

We're simplifying permissions

We've made permissions more streamlined to help you and your members get to your content faster and more easily.

Groups that use Guest Password

What's new? Members can no longer use a Guest Password to access Groups.

Action required! Please review our guide on permissions and select a setting that includes members affected by this change, so they can continue to access your content.

After 10 August... Guest Passwords will be removed from all Groups; Topics are unaffected.

Groups and Topics that use Password only

What's new? Members can no longer use a Password to access Groups and Topics.

Action required! Please review our guide on permissions and select a setting that includes members affected by this change, so they can continue to access your content.

After 10 August... Password-only will be disabled for all Groups and Topics. You can still access your Groups and Topics, and the CoPilots of your Groups can still access those Groups.

Groups and Topics that use Guest Mode

What's new? Members can no longer use Guest Mode links to access Groups and Topics. The links will redirect to an error page advising them to request access from the lead.

Action required! Please review our guide on permissions and select a setting that includes members affected by this change, so they can continue to access your content.

After 10 August... Guest Mode will be disabled for all Groups and Topics.

Topics that are part of a Group but have different permissions

What's new? Topics can no longer have different permissions from their Groups; but they can still have a Guest Password.

Action required! (Optional; see next for alternative) Please update the permissions of these Topics to match the permissions of their Groups.

After 10 August...

  • These Topics will be Hidden, and your members won't be able to access them.
  • If you re-Activate a Topic, it'll have the same permissions as the Group; and only members who have access to the Group can access the Topic.
  • You may then choose to add a Guest Password to that Topic.
  • Alternatively, if the community that can access a Topic should be different than those with access to the Group, you can move the Topic to a different Group.

All Topics will now be part of a group

We're saying sayonara to Standalone Topics! This change only affects how Topics without a Group are organized: no action is needed, and your members can continue to access your content as usual.

What's new? All Topics have to belong in a Group. When you create a new Topic, you'll have to put it in an existing Group or create a new Group for that Topic.

Action required! None!

After 10 August...

  • All Topic settings remain the same; including the Join Code, so members can still use it to access the Topic.
  • A new Group will automatically be created for each existing Standalone Topic, and the Topic will be moved into that Group.
  • The Group will have the same name, status, and notification setting as the Topic; but the Group will have its own Join Code.
  • The Group will have the same permissions as the Topic, e.g. Member Email or Username. If the Topic also has a Guest Password, however, it will keep the Password but the Group will not have a Guest Password.

Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our community safe, and empowering members of all ages to share their voices.
